We cannot see without light. Without it the world would be completely
dark and we would either bumble about blindly or adapt and use other senses to
move around. It goes without saying that we depend on light greatly as a
species. Without light we would not be able to see the great wonders of the
world, the beauty of the natural landscape, or the familiar faces of the ones
we love. Light is also the key component of photography. At its most basic
element, a photograph is simply a recording of light and/or its absence.
From Man’s discovery of fire, humans have always had a fascination with light and I am no exception from that. My inspiration for this project came about one afternoon when I saw the sunlight shining through the window in my room. I have always found the way that its rays shine in, with their contrast to the shadows around and of the bars on the window to be supremely beautiful. Further, I have observed, over several years, my two dogs and two cats back home. Each day the sun is out, they jockey for position near my home’s south facing windows so that they can bask in the warmth of the sun as it shines through the window. My goal for this series of photographs was to capture the essence of how light shines through an opening like a window or door and to observe the unique forms that it takes. In the different photos, the light may either be perceived as sunlight, moonlight, or man-made light. To strengthen the emotion of the photos and to make them other-worldly, I used extremely saturated colored light.
